Pulitzer-worthy?

I recently finished reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and was surprised that a book that refers to mom as "moms," uses the N-word profusely and is primarily about an overweight boy's pursuit of getting laid won the Pulitzer prize.
