Chinese wealth paradox

One thing that was evident from our trip to the Maldives: China is where the money's at. About 90% of the hotel we stayed at was occupied by mainland Chinese, the rest by Korean honeymooners and European families. The Chinese women would walk around the resort with their Chanel, Hermes and LV bags, Gucci sandals, and designer sundresses, yet the men would often be wearing the most hideous country bumpkin clothes (albeit often with a Patek watch). They would sit around and order bottles of champagne and wine that cost over $1K, yet during the free breakfast buffet, pile their plates ridiculously high with bread, rice and eggs. And to me, therein lies the paradox.

These families easily plunked down three grand a night for a family-sized villa, yet hoarded free food as if they would never be offered food again. They would carry the newest iPhones and the most luxury branded accessories, and yet still look and act like complete hicks. They would often have horrendously misshaped and blackened teeth, the families would let their kids run wild and crazy (and loud) without trying to quiet them down, they'd smoke everywhere, and talk in decidedly non-indoor voice voices. All money, no class.
