-San is what you add to names when speaking to or about someone in Japanese...sort of to show respect, sort of as endearment. As in Deb-san. Kind of like Miss or Mister in English, but more endearing. But in Japan, they also often add it to restaurants, so a soba restaurant, which is soba-ya, might be referred to as soba-ya-san.
Today, I experienced it being used in a whole new way. I had a physical today and my doctor, before measuring my heartbeat said: "I will measure your heart-san now." This amused me so much that I almost giggled. Heart-san - how cute!!
