For my 30th bday present to myself, I booked a one-week surf vacation in Bali!! A full week of tropical weather, soft sand, warm water, surfing, paddleboarding, Indonesian food, massages, monkey sightings and maybe a little bit of cultural tourism in paradise...so so so so so excited!

Tokyo, and perhaps Asia in general, is a place you live during the week, but leave during the weekend. Pretty much every ex-pat I have met here leaves the city at least one weekend a month to jet off to HK, Seoul, Shanghai, Phuket, London, NY, LA, SF, Hawaii, Guam or any number of other places. It's a fabulous, fabulous lifestyle. One friend told me in the last year she has been home to Canada 3X, Seoul 6X, London 2X, NY 2X, Phuket 2X, as well as all over Japan including Kamakura, Hokkaido, Nagano, Sapporo (it helps that in addition to the 15 national holidays, she gets SIX weeks of vacay - man, really need to find a job with a European company).

i just got back from bali last night!! i highly recommend the bulgari or amanusa resorts. they were amazing. and if you want to take a two-day trip to see komodo dragons (by boat), let me know and i'll shoot you details. when are you going? enjoy!
M- the bulgari resort is like $1K a night!! haha, I'm staying in a place that's $50/night, close to the beach where I'll spend most of my time on the water! But komodo dragons sound cool - and any recs you have for restaurants or activities would be great!
*sigh* i couldn't resist looking up pics of bulgari and amanusa - they look absolutely amazing! one day....
