Sometimes I wonder if we are fated (doomed) to repeat the mistakes of our parents. Maybe these things are predestined. That's how I feel when I'm having a Calvinist moment.
But at my core I believe in free will. We are not bound to history, we are not bound to repeat the mistakes of our past or our parents' past. We have a choice - we always have a choice. And we are accountable for the choices we make. We don't always get a choice in everything in our lives. We don't even always get to choose who we love, because our hearts sometimes do the deciding for us.
But we most definitely have a choice in how we treat the people we love. Everyday is full of choices, big and small. Whether to be sweet or cross to your loved ones. Whether to be thankful for them or resent them. Whether to be loyal or betray them. Whether to support them or be indifferent. Whether to be faithful physically and/or emotionally. Whether to see the best or worst in them. Every day, every moment is a choice. And that is so much harder than predeterminism.
